Pagan Lore for Today, December 5

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 09:23 AM [General]

In ancient Greece, an annual seaside festival (the Poseidea) was celebrated annually on this date to honor the sea-god Poseidon, consort of the Mother Goddess.

In Italy, the First Feast of Saint Lucia is held on this date each year. Before being Christianized into a Saint, she was originally worshiped as Lucina, a Pagan goddess of light who also presided over childbirth.

    OMG must have!

Friday, December 5, 2008, 10:20 AM EST [General]

OMG I have been seeing these false eyelashes all over the place and I must get a pair for LBD next week.

Well, obviously some are a bit too much for LBD but there are some nice, real looking ones. I'll try and work it! They're made by Shu Uemura and you can get them at Nordstrom. I may have to get some while I'm there this weekend.

Celebs have been rocking them too:

Christina seems to be a big fan of them! I can't wait!

Goddess of the Day / Spell of the Day Dec 5

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 09:20 AM [General]

    Walt Disney’s Birthday (United States)

    Castalia

Themes: Art; Creativity; Joy; Children; Inspiration

    Symbols: Cartoon Characters; Fountains

About Castalia: In Greek tradition, this goddess embodies the force of artistic inspiration. Her power is so profuse that art often depicts her simply as an ever-flowing fountain from which we can drink when our motivation wanes.

To Do Today: On this day in 1901, the legendary Walt Disney was born. During his life, Disney inspired millions of children with a Castalia-rich imagination and well-beloved cartoon characters. To remember this man and uplift Castalia’s childlike ability to awaken the artist within, watch a favorite Walt Disney film today, reveling in the wonder of it. Then get out and do something creative! Try drawing your own magical cartoon (this is just for you and the goddess, so don’t worry about a lack of skill - the keynote today is having fun with your fancy).

To quaff this goddess’s inspiration for any task you’re undertaking, find a water fountain and drink fully of it. Visualize the water filled with a color of light that, to you, represents creativity. Also fill a small container with a secure top with some of this water and keep it with you. Carry Castalia’s power into the situation in which you need inspiration. Pour a little out before your meeting, artistic effort, or speech to release her power. Or sip a bit of it to wet your whistle and renew the magic.

The Greatest Singers of all Time (Brits need not apply)

Friday, December 5, 2008, 03:19 PM GMT [General]

Question: on what list of the 100 Greatest Singers Of All Time would Bob Dylan rate higher than Dusty Springfield?

Why, a list compiled by an American rock magazine, of course. Rolling Stone have weighed in with their portentously titled top 100 of all time but then, if you study the fine print, it turns out they asked musicians, journalists and industry insiders to name their favourite singers of the rock era. Which might explain the absence of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday ... or, for that matter, Pavarotti and all his operatic predecessors (although, guys, Sinatra made more than a few great records during the 'rock era', albeit very light on the distorted guitars). Check out the full list at the bottom of the page.

    Gallery Photo
    The greatest ever: Aretha Franklin?

For some people, time evidently started with Elvis Presley (who rates number 3, with a fascinating article by Robert Plant, himself at number 15). Heartbreak Hotel represents the Big Bang. Everything before that is just white noise.

Actually, a lot that follows is white noise too. I am not really sure what the criteria for a great singer is. In the modern age, vocal presence and character seem more important than an ability to hit the notes. I myself have a fondness for singers who can't really sing, so I am not disappointed at all to see Bob Dylan (no 7), Tom Waits (82), Lou Reed (62) and Johnny Cash (21) on the list, I just wonder what happened to Leonard Cohen.

Brian Wilson is on there too (at 52). The man is a musical genius with a gift for harmony, but has anybody actually heard him sing? His voice is so thin and shaky, he has it doubled up by a backing singer for his solo gigs. He wasn't even the lead singer in The Beach Boys for goodness sake.

But personally I think if you are going to call your list "great singers", as opposed to "great vocalists", being able to stay in tune should be a pre-requisite. On that grounds, Aretha Franklin is named at number one, and who is going to argue with the Queen of Soul? But with typical rock and roll machismo, there is not another woman on the list till we reach Tina Turner at 17, and there are only 24 in the whole top 100. Is it really the case that women can't sing as well as men?

Even considering this is the "rock era" (which possibly excludes such pyrotechnic warblers as Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion on the grounds that they don't have a rock and roll bone in their bodies), there was no room for Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Mama Cass, Chrissie Hynde, Natalie Merchant, Joan Baez, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Angie Stone and (someone from Rolling Stone should be forced to write a letter of explanation about this one) Emmylou Harris, widely regarded as the greatest harmony singer of the "rock era".

But look a little closer, and you will also notice that there is no Kate Bush (surely one of the most distinctive and original vocalists of the last thirty years), Amy Winehouse (arguably the dominant voice of contemporary popular music), Sade (a genuinely original soul stylist) or even (a particular favourite of mine for the character and emotion of her vocals) Beth Gibbons from Portishead.

And that is because they are not just women, but British women, and Americans apparently don't hold our singers in much regard. Only 19 made the top 100. We couldn't even muster our own top twenty! Extracted from the poll, the British and Irish contingent boils down to:

    19 Joe Cocker
    18 Annie Lennox
    17 Morrissey
    16 Thom Yorke
    15 Rod Stewart
    14 Roger Daltrey
    13 Eric Bourdon
    12 Paul Rodgers
    11 Elton John
    10 Dusty Springfield
    09 Steve Winwood
    08 Bono
    07 Van Morrison
    06 David Bowie
    05 Freddie Mercury
    04 Mick Jagger
    03 Robert Plant
    02 Paul McCartney
    01 John Lennon

Somewhere, Lennon is having a good giggle at pipping Macca again. Tom Jones, Cat , Stevens. Sting, George Michael, Mick Hucknall and Bryan Ferry are all off in a huff. Liam Gallagher is grumbling that he could roar Roger Daltrey off a stage any day. And Adele is wondering what anyone born after 1975 has to do just to get noticed?

Best singer completely absent from the top 100? For me, it would be a toss up between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. I think I'm just going to have to stop fretting about this now, lie down in a dark room and listen to 'Love Hurts'.

That list in full (but careful, if you have high blood pressure, I recommend you sit down now):

    100 Mary J. Blige
    99 Steven Tyler
    98 Stevie Nicks
    97 Joe Cocker
    96 B.B. King
    95 Patti LaBelle
    94 Karen Carpenter
    93 Annie Lennox
    92 Morrissey
    91 Levon Helm
    90 The Everly Brothers
    89 Solomon Burke
    88 Willie Nelson

    Big Buck Tacos!!!

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 09:19 AM [General]

Well, last night we cooked up the first batch of hubby's big buck.  Grabbed a couple one pound packages of ground venison out of the freezer, browned it, seasoned it, and make the yummiest batch of soft tacos I've had in a while!  It was WONDERFUL!  No "gamey" taste what-so-ever!

I think we'll be enjoying "Big Buck Tacos" pretty regularly for a while, as we had quite a bit of meat from his buck this year.  Of course we will be enjoying some "Small Buck Chili", and "Medium-sized Doe Meatballs" as well!  LOL!  I am especially excited for the backstraps and loins.  Plan on making "Venison Tips" over rice, some enchiladas, spaghetti, stews, soups, caseroles...man, I am getting hungry just thinking about it!

I like the fact that we are giving ourselves and our kids this leaner red meat, without all the chemicals and hormones and antibiotics that much of the beef around here has!  Better quality meat, less fat.  I have had deer that tastes gamey, and I didn't care for it.  But, none of the deer my hubby has ever brought home has ever had a funny taste to it.  Of course, we've purchased half a cow before and had it butchered, and every doggone package of meat we got tasted just awful!  Like a chemical or cleaning solution taste almost!  We sent it back, of course.

Anyhoo, hope you all are enjoying your venison as well!  I know there are a lot of good recipes posted on other blogs that I plan on checking out!

Meditation With Native American Elders -December 5

“I’ve had a long regard for generational things:
pottery, cultural things, participation in dancing, extended family. Only in that way does culture
survive; only in that way is culture active.
    Tessie Naranjo, SANTA CLARA PUEBLO
Culture teaches us how to live and it ensures that knowledge about life is handed down from
generation to generation. Culture gives us the feeling of belonging. It helps us raise our family
in a good way. It teaches us how to treat one another. Culture sets boundaries for societies. We
need to develop our culture. If we have left our culture, then we need to come back to it. Culture
leads us back to the Great Spirit. Sometimes in our lives, we leave what we know works and
experiment with something else. Then we get into trouble. So we need to come back home. Indian
people are lucky to have a culture to return to.
Creator, thank you for the culture. Let me live it today.

A Cherokee Feast Of Days -December 5

Even with free choice, each of us has a tomorrow for which we are responsible. Never believe for a
moment that you are free to meander across the world at random without influencing anything and
anyone. No matter how misguided you may have been in the past, you have sensed there is something
greater that loves and tries to help. Do not cut yourself off from Spirit help. Emerson said
there is no knowledge that is not power. Know that you have power, not over others but over
yourself. If you believe you can overcome anything, you can overcome anything. Trust your-self and
trust the Spirit to help you do what you were meant to do.
No longer should the Indian be dehumanized.

my bowling leagues in the rearview mirror .for this week

    Friday, December 5, 2008, 09:14 AM [General]

hey all whats up it,s me again yes i know the holiday season is upon us and our bowling season is going just as fast too..this week for me wasn,t all that great but i,ll manage it and get thru it and do my best...so for my monday night handicap league  i didn,t do well at all in shooting 139-206-182 for a 527 series for the night and team wise we won 5 out of 7 points on the night taking our record to 61-44 for the season so far and i,ll take it.next monday night they will have to put me in blind since ,ll be in raleigh nc for a david byrne concert so i hope they do well without me there as we are in the top 6 in the standings thus far with 2 weeks to go in the first half of the season.now for last nights thursday night mix league i started out real good but went downhill from there 245-181-162 for a 588 series for the night..team wise we lost them all and being in first place that didn,t help us either but the others chasing us had problems too so we may still be in first going to next week..so for this weeks bowling it wasn,t the best of bowling for me so i need to get my average back up a bit on monday night in 2 weels when i return for the position round to closeout the first half of the season for monday night..so folks have a great weekend and i,ll be back next week to bring you a recap of next weeks thursday night mix league and hopefully i,ll know what my monday night team did without me too...

    thanks

Friday, December 5, 2008, 10:09 AM EST [General]

    Cordialmente
